Smear frames
For scene 2 shot 5 Max wanted the zoom in for Betty to have smear frames to help sell the motion. I had a hard time trying to find any examples of 2D animation that used smears to show camera motion, as most smear frames are against a static background with the characters motion being smeared, however in this shot Betty is stationary and only the camera moves. I did find a useful video on the subject of frames that helped me to find a starting point
Using the advice in Crowne Princes' video I started drawing the features of every frame as a kind of guideline. I did this by drawing Bettys pose over the Stunt double 3D export with the camera movement. after that, I took the details from two frames and drew an outline around them while also connecting them together. I would then move to the next frame and do the same.
The process was a bit tedious as I decided it would be easiest to draw each feature separately so it would be easier to manage what frames will connect to each other. I first started with the eyes as people tend to notice them the most, and in the video I watched Crowne approached smears in a similar way. After that I added in the head shape, then the nose, mouth, ears, eyelashes, hair and the body. By drawing out each feature separately it allowed me to keep the drawings clear and consistent. I also decided against having Bettys fringe go over the eye lineart as I felt the eyes were really important to sell the swear and the movement, and as I was animating this zoom on ones I figured it would be forgiving enough to have the fringe go back over the eye lineart when the camera comes to a stop.
This is a cleaned version of the animation. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out given my lack of experience in drawing smears, and I feel like I understand how to approach them a bit better now
