2D Animation and Sakuga Research

Little Witch Academia - Studio Trigger

As part of research into 2D animation I wanted to look more into the recent cultural following of Sakuga and the many Japanese animators that have caused this movement of appreciation for individual artists and their contributions to the medium. As part of my research I used the website sakugabooru, which is home to many clips , commentary and information about notable animtion and animators, with new submissions daily and a tag system to search for shot types, studios, animators, genres and more.

On the site I also found a very informative video exploring the history of sakuga, notable and influential animators, their works and trends within their bodies of works.

Sakuga Panel 2013
Hosted by Sean Bines, Colin Groesbeck and Neil Clingerman.

"Sakuga written as '作画' in Japanese has a literal meaning of 'working drawing' but generally is used to mean just 'animation'. However in regards this website (and the fans who visit it) it takes on a slightly different meaning where it refers to exceptionally animated scenes, 'good sakuga', usually through the work of a talented animator."
