Thumbnail practice
Today in class we went over the basics for thumbnailing and what the Director wanted for certain scenes. Then as a class we did thumbnail sketches interpreting the script for Ugly fish. we managed to get through 2 scenes, Pavo waiting for Betty to arrive and the anxiety storm brewing in the restaurant. mine ended up being a bit more detailed than thumbnail sketches but I was glad I was able to get a bit of emotion and character acting into the panels rather than just the character positioning and shot type.
I'd definitely want to play around with some more experimental and extreme shot types but I think it was good to get what was in my head  down on  paper as a start. It was interesting to see how many ways one scene could be interpreted by different people and I thought there were a lot of really cool ideas and shot types form the rest of the class.
with this scene I dont think I was a happy with it but considering it was the first thing I drew it was a good warm up exercise. I do like the Pavo POV shot where he looks up and sees Betty, who is kind of radiant and breaks through his mental storm. I also liked how a lot of people had a really similar first shot with the door opening and ringing the bell. Before class I also decided to do a little thumbnail exercise by practicing quick sketching scenes in animation to see how other companies and artists have tackled composition and shot types. I decided to jump into something blind that I hadn't seen before and decided to go with the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho (1992). I decided to do it in pen so lines would be permanent and I wouldn't get caught up on wanting to erase and make it perfect.
Most of the scenes I ended up thumbnailing out were talking scenes, and while I know there wont be any audible conversations in Ugly Fish a lot of character acting kind of takes the place of dialogue so I think the study is still pretty relevant. The rule of thirds was one of the main things I noticed throughout the shots I sketched
