Pavo and Betty Concept art

to start of in the design process I wanted to try and create a lot of different designs in a handful of different art styles. I knew the group consensus for pavos design was tall, lanky and awkard, so I tried to mostly stick to those points throughout my designs. I think one of my favourite designs ended up being the Pavo on the far bottom right, as I liked the simple shape composition and slightly rounded feeling to him.

For Bettys design I  was a lot more unsure of which direction to go, I wanted to include rounder shapes and make her shorter than Pavo. I took a lot of inspiration from the marvelous misadventures of flapjack for several designs as I feel the artstyle uses really simple shapes in a way that looks more complex, but still easy to draw and replicate between artists, which is something I think the design really needs to achieve.

I really like the curly hair detail, so thats something I would like to incorperate into her final designs. In terms of colour the group wants her image to replicate a goldfish, so I am thinking of sticking mostly to golds, yellows and oranges, with maybe red accents if I can make it work.

I decided to narrow down and do clean lineart and colours for the Pavo designs I felt would work the most. I went with a mostly blue green colour scheme, to contrast Bettys design and maybe represent water / the drowning feeling of anxiety. I also wanted to get an idea of what the silhouettes would look like to make sure the characters would be recognizable from a distance and I'm feeling pretty happy with almost all of Pavos concepts. I like the design of the bottom left Pavo however I don't think it really matches the story so I am going to scrap that design moving forward.

I couldn't narrow down a design for betty as much so I decided to line and colour almost all of them so I could have a better idea of what they would look like as a finished drawing.  so far my favourite ones are the top 2 to the far right and the bottom right character.  I think the silhouettes for some of the designs are really solid and could work quite well.

From the feedback I got from class I managed to narrow it down to 4 betty designs. I was also told to experiment with some more vibrant designs, which I did in the top corner. I feel like the colours are clashing a Little and I want to turn it greyscale to get a better idea of the values so I can tweak the colours a little more.
Pavos designs I felt needed a lot more simplifying in terms of clothing detail and hair silhouettes. I made some notes over the main changes to his character design. some people thought he might have looked too nerdy so I decided to go for a slightly more formal look to him.
I created a quick reference sheet for the designs, I wanted to do them in the same style, although I think a bit of the character got lost. I'm going to try and replicate melissas version of pavo as I feel she did a really solid job on his design, and he looks realy lively ands I think it'll match the style of the short films really well. I think we shouldnt make the designs too clean due to the surrealist nature and tone of the film, ut its also hard to try and balance that with creating a replicatable style that everyone can easily draw.
