Inspirations: The Marvelous Misadventures of flapjack, Spongebob Squarepants, Ren & Stimpy, Junji Ito

Painterly/stylised Aesthetic

My main inspiration for this piece of concept art was Ren and Stimpy, as they tend to approach their gross ups in a very painterly style with no lineart. I also wanted the fish to be very cartoony and expressive to help both the viewer and Pavo to see it as a living thing, even though it has been long dead. I think it could do better with a bit more definition and value range in terms of painting, however without a direct reference my painting skill isn't the best, and I didn't want to spend too long on a concept piece that is likely going to only be used as a reference or idea if we do decided to use a similar style.

Realism Aesthetic
This one I used a photo reference more closely with both the fish shape and the colours, as I used the colour dropper to use colours directly from the reference image I was using to help give the painting a really close sense of realism. I think the character in the fish isn't quite there, so I would like to blend the realism style at least a tiny bit with something more stylised and cartoonish.

Colour

My main inspiration for this piece was Junji Ito. as his manga horror books are done completely in black and white I wanted really solid linework and screentone before I thought about the colour of the piece. I think this style can be utilised to bring out really creepy and disturbing imagery, but might be harder to draw reliably and in a uniform way between artists. I could potentially try to bring more of the spongebob references and inspiration into the piece, as it makes use of a painterly style with lineart, however it has already been proven to work and I wanted to experiment with a style not used as much in animation, as well as adding colour to see if the surrealistic and uncomfortable effect still remained.

Goldfish designs

I decided to try make some goldfish designs for Pavo's apartment. I wanted the colour palette to be very similar to betty's. I wasn't sure if we want the goldfish to be happy or sad so I redrew all the designs with both emotions in mind.
