Finalizing Character design and style

Today before we hand in the proposal there are a few things we wanna tweak and change , the main thing the character design team needs to get sorted includes:

-Finalising art style and character designs
-Creating final version, turnaround and expression sheet for the 'Normal' artstyle of Betty and Pavo
-Redrawing and finalising the waiter design in the finalised art style
-Experimenting with more surrealist/gross up visuals of characters
-Incorporating the Philippines & taxidermy more into Betty's character visually?

Character List
-Pavo
-Betty
-Waiter
-Goldfish
-Background couple
-Background Couple with Baby
-Old Background Couple

For now we're focusing on the characters that are crucial to the plot, which includes Betty, Pavo and the Waiter. while the goldfish is important we really want to establish the main characters who are human so we can really nail down a uniform artstyle between character designs. I have been tasked with creating a final design that gives betty a bit more character by incorporating a bit more of her backstory. Melissa and I discussed adding in a detail about her job as a taxidermist or her Philippine heritage. Initially we looked at some traditional jewelry but a lot of it was really ornate and would have been quite hard to animate.

One idea I had was to have something like a taxidermied/ animal fur scarf that she made herself. I decided to sketch this idea out and Meliisa and Max seemed to like it, so we decided to commit to it and add it into her final design.

Linework: I wanted to make sure the base shapes of Bettys composition were still fairly obvious to help anyone animating be able to grasp what she will look like from multiple angles. I also wanted to make sure the linework was really uniform and clean for ease of colouring. Originally I had a thicker line width when drawing betty but Max thought the thinner lineweight would reflect the end product more accurately, so I decided to use thinner lines for the finalised concept art for Betty
The colours have remained mostly the same, we tweaked Bettys skin colour to better reflect her ethnicity now that it had been decided by the writing team. Her hair was desaturated slightly to look a little easier on the eyes and to compliment the other shades throughout the design. I also made her lipstick the same colour as her dress skirt to help mmake the colour palette more manageable for the colourists when we get down to that.
This is how the final turnaround came out. I essentially used the same pose from the concept art except I tweaked it a little to be more symmetrical to help create a smoother turnaround. Eventually I want to make this a gif however for the document that wont be necessary or possible.

I think her design translates quite well into a 3D space and I'm really happy with where her design ended up. I think it reflects her character and personality well and I think the more simplistic design will allow us to push expressions and shots further in the animation phase.
I also decided to do a few expressions for the expression sheets so I could explore drawing her past the standard default look she'll have. I managed to capture the process of the turnaround and the expressions in Clip Studio Paint, which shows my process of creating the turnaround as well as lining and colouring.
