While I wasn't in class today due to feeling unwell, all the roles have been given out and will be locked in later this week on Friday. The main roles I got were Character Artist and keyframe Animator. I'm really happy with the roles I got considering how average my showreel and pitch went with the class. I haven't had a chance to catch up with the rest of the team in character design/concept art yet but I figured I could jump right in to some research and development ideas, and I'm planning on going to the meeting tomorrow to catch up with what's currently going on.
My current plan is to come up with a mood board featuring some possible inspirations visually or narratively. some current Ideas I have include
Spongebob
The marvelous misadventures of Flapjack
Bojack Horseman
COLORFUL
Fish Hooks
The Amazing World of Gumball

A lot of these initial inspirations I feel work cause htey have elements of the ocean, gross up/close ups and mixed media. I know the setting wont necessarily be underwater but I think using motifs and visuals from these artstyles might be beneficial. I'm hoping to work on some character concepts by combining different aspects of these styles, or even through imitating them to try understand how certain art styles and techniques could be feasible in our own production process.
I remembered to record a timelapse of my attempt to recreate The Amazing world of Gumball's art style. It features mostly rounded shapes and heads, with very rounded features and expressions. I like the shadow they use to seperate the limbs from the body and to create a 3D sense. I'm not sure how well it would work for ugly fish but I think the style has aspects that would be easy enough to replicate. the models also feature flat colours, allowing for easier shadowing and not having to deal with textures on top of colour and shade. The show also makes use of a uniform line width which I think is something we should also aim to use in order to make the lineart consistent between shots and artists

I forgot to hit the timelapse button for my art study of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, I really like this style as I feel it is reminiscent of early animation, I also feel like its unique style separates it from slightly more modern cartoons. TMMOF made use of the gross up technique, which I think will be helpful as a reference as to how we can balance a similar visual look switching between a more traditional 2D animation and close up, highly detailed still shots. The line width varies a lot more in flapjack l which I feel could be more difficult to replicate in a way that is consistent.
I also like the more angular feel to the characters, as they have much more sharper edges and interesting shape composition. I feel like using a similar artstyle could help to create a Diverse looking cast while still feeling uniform and consistent between designs.
