Pitch review
Yesterday in class we went through everyone's pitch proposals before eventually voting on the ones we liked the most. The choose your own adventure concept that Sarah and I worked on seemed to be the most popular with everyone, so we decided as a class to do something along those lines. At the moment we are unsure of if it should be a series of videos or a game. I think a game similar to a visual novel with cutscenes might be a good way to go about it, so it's a nice in-between.
I really liked the Mecha school and the Cryptid flat ideas, I feel like there's a lot of room for creativity and both feel like they'd have a fun and lighthearted premise to them. I feel like both ideas would have a large scope for concept art, character designs and a lot of fun homages and references to the works that inspired them. I also really liked the Cyberpunk Idea, I feel like the genre is really popular at the moment, and I really enjoy working with vibrant lighting and darker grungy locations, so I feel like I would be able to contribute a lot and have fun working on things like concept art and background design. Last year I painted an arcade at night which I feel has a similar aesthetic to the cyberpunk movement and I had a lot of fun working on it as a personal project.
We still need to establish what roles everyone will have, if I could choose I would like to be involved in are Concept art, Character design, 2D animation/art, background art, storyboard and marketing.
After some discussions with the class we found that there were a number of issues we would possibly run into with the choose your own adventure idea, mostly with how we didn't have a concrete story and the workload might be too much for a 20 week project. I think if we had a bit longer to discuss all of the other ideas before voting we might have been able to vote more fairly. I think the idea is still possible however I do think the issues that arise from a choose your own adventure might be much harder to fix.
I think using a non traditional choose your own path system might work as well, instead of having constantly branching out options, having 3 solid paths where you can cross between might make creating the story branches less complicated.
At the end of the day I'm not super attached to the pick a path idea, and even if we feel like doing a more traditional animation I'm sure the class will still create something really good with the ideas that have been floating around from other pitches. I do have a more fleshed out story idea for my personal project that I feel might work with a pick a path style animation, but as a solo project it might be a bit too ambitious.
