Character Design

These were some initial ink sketches I did when I first came up with the idea of incorporating a mouse within her design. I also had an idea of having this tall parallax shot to introduce the setting and character, and it builds on one of the earlier initial sketches I did.
I also wanted to show the fluidity and movement I wanted to accomplish, so I made her design very shape based. I was debating between naming her Lǎoshǔ or Nezumi, as Lǎoshǔ is chinese for mouse, which would be the language spoken in kowloon, but Nezumi which is japanese for mouse would be more reflective of Miyazakis and Studio Ghiblis influence. Because the kowloon city I am depicting doesnt have to represent a realistic version I think I might use Nezumi as I feel it fits well.

Recently I've been exploring characters designs for the protagonist of my animation. I want to replicate the iconic studio ghibli art style but also blend different aspects of my own artstyle into the character to make it efficient and easy to draw when animating.I took inspiration for her character from a handful of photographs from people who once lived in kowloon city.

I wanted a simple outfit that would reflect the culture and life of the walled city, as well as to make it easier to animate for me in the future. I also started thinking about how I would establish equilibrium before introducing the non equilibrium element to the story. I thought I could maybe incorporate animal related iconography into my character after she over goes a transformation , and I felt something mouse/rat-like would be fitting as rats were famously found running throughout the corridors of kowloon city.
