Library research//2 slides
We had a library visit this lesson to give us a refresher on how to use databases. we were also warned abnout APA referencing and how it will change this semester/year.
-when APA referencing, make sure to use APA 7th edition instead of 6th.
-Be wary of using databases in built APA references as they may still be on 6th
2 slides in 5 minutes references a handful of stores and products that I have taken inspiration from. The links to these stores are here:
https://www.bayleejae.com/shop
https://www.pixielocks.ca/product-page/confetti-club-cake-pin
https://www.clammyheart.com/
I also need to write a small speech detailing my thought process on choosing my research project, which I have written out below
Speech (500-1000 words)
For my project I really want to focus on researching what it takes to create an appealing product design that appeals to an audience. Merchandising and selling my own art is something I've been interested in the past few years, however a lot of the services and resources found online apply to an american demographic, so I want to research how this could be viable in New Zealand. I also want to research what parts of design work well with merchandise and illustration type products so I can apply these things to my own artworks moving forward. Creating a product with a low impact on the environment is also something that I think is important, so I will have to research how these products can be created locally and sustainably if possible.
For my design inspiration, I took 3 of my favourite content creators who sell merchandise or products online. I really love their bright yet simplistic designs, I feel they translate well to character goods and I want to replicate their aesthetics within my own designs. These designs belong to the online stores Pixielocks, Clammy Heart and Baylee Jae. All of these creators advocate for sustainability, Homemade products and recycling, which I think is a really important message and something everyone should be mindful of.
I looked in my sketchbooks for design ideas and I thought this doodle I did of a little plant boy would work really well and would link in to the sustainability aspect of my research project that I want to pursue. I decided to sketch out a few more Ideas and start experimenting with poses, emotions, accessories and colour combinations.
The products I plan to make are Tote bags, Stickers and miniature prints, as I believe these can all be sourced locally within New Zealand and these products don't rely on plastics, which is something I would like to avoid. The prints I could possibly print on site at sit. The stickers I have looked into a few website services for, however with the right printer I may be able to do this myself. for the totes I could look into hand painting or if it would be viable to use an on demand print service.
In the past I have used online print service Redbubble to order personalised stickers, so I may look into their other products. I believe they also have printed tote bags and art prints as well as stickers. They are also a carbon neutral company and print their Oceania region products in Australia, which will reduce carbon emissions from shipping and transport compared to sourcing a product from China or elsewhere around the world.
Because these research projects will be displayed in a gallery setting, I wanted to create a small Artist alley type setup, so it looks like a small stall you could find in a market. this way I can display the different merchandise pieces I make and provide it within the context of it being a marketable product that's design is appealing to a mass audience. I want my installation to also be eco-friendly and to promote reduce reuse and recycle. I plan to source all the materials for the stall from second hand or recyclable eco friendly materials. I also wanted to go with a more earthy environmental tone so I want to Incorporated yellows, greens and possibly plants or wood.
Thank you for listening to my presentation, does anyone have any questions or feedback?
