Dream Warrior Artist statement

As well as entering my research project into the think and create exhibition I have also decided to enter in my 2D animation Dream Warrior. because of this I will need to write out another artist statement focusing on the what, how and why of my project. I already handed in my pitch bible cover to give an idea of what my project is about.

What:  A 2D animated short that follows a tired worker whos life changes when she is tricked into becoming a hero who fights nightmares.

How: 2D frame by frame animation hand drawn on a wacom cintiq. Frames created and compiled withing Toon boom harmony based on a storyboard animatic created using Toon Boom Storyboard. Background assets created using Photoshop with ink brushes and shaded with various layer types. Scenes editted together using Adobe After Effects.

Why: Inspired by the magical genre, superheros, cute animations, character designs.

Artist Statement:
Dream Warrior is a 1 minute 2D animated short that that follows a tired worker whos life changes when she is tricked into becoming a hero who fights nightmares. This animation project has been a way for me to explore many different outlets in the creative industries, as the project started out as a storyboard project and developed into a comic, environmental concept art research project, and finally a finished 2D digital animation.

Dream Warrior began as an animatic created within Toon boom storyboard. From there it developed into its finished product through backgrounds created within Photoshop and finished hand drawn animations and rigged puppet animation within Toon Boom Harmony 15 and 16. The individual shots and sound effects were then compiled into one video using Adobe After Effects.

Dream Warrior is a project that I have a lot of passion for, as it covers many aspects of the animation process that fascinate me, including: Character design, story boarding, animatics, narrative story writing and Environmental artwork. The action and superhero genre is also something I find inspiring and compelling, so I decided to incorporate elements like origin stories and alternative hero costumes into Dream Warrior.
