Sonic was a big part of the success of the sega genesis console. The hedgehog was selected by the public as the most popular character when designer Naoto Oshima took sketches of various characters including a dog, and man with a mustache, but the hedgehog design was the most popular by far. The character is still very popular nearly 30 years later.

Dune II was a big push in the real time strategy game market. the game was based on military and players would deploy resources and soldiers on the map to defeat enemies. This game, unlike many of the time, was a top down view game, where many of the era were platformers and side scrollers, like sonic.

Video game violence came into discussion with title releases such as mortal kombat, The video game industry took it upon themselves to regulate the video games rating system to avoid government influence as this would give content creators more control. Doom also became very popular and was a first person Shooter game.

Will wright creates the sims and was the best selling computer game ever. The game had a large following of female players. The sims focused on the concept of real life simulation. Similar games include Utopia (released by intellivion in 1982), Populous(created by Peter Molyneaux in 1989), SimCity by wright again in 1989 and Civilisation by Sid Meier in 1991
How video games changed the world
Pong was a foundation for video games. its basic game play design and look didnt matter too much because the players found it fun and were willing to pay money to play it. Home consoles finally gave power to the people in what media they chose to consume. TV at the time was limited but a home console allowed players to enjoy videogames whenever they wanted to.
Space invaders
Space invaders is credited with bringing video games into the main stream. often arcade games could only be found within arcades, but space invader arcade cabinets were found almost anywhere in public.

Pac Man
The designs of pacman were purposefully made to look cute to appeal to female players, and the iconic shape of pacman was based on a pizza, as the designer thought food would again appeal to the female player base. Pacman was the first game to feature cutscenes between and before gameplay, which helped introduce the humor aspect into the video game industry. Pacman pushed forward character designs that looked more appealing and representing humans/animals etc.
Manic Miner
highly renowned for its bright ugly colours and off tune music. The game had a lot of humour in it and was created for the british computer system spectrum. There was a big rivalry between local made system Spectrum and Us computer system commodore.

Elite
The BBC micro was a third computer system but was looked down on by most other users. Elite came out in 1994 for the BBC micro computer. The game was very advanced ad was a game that simulated the universe. It was considered a massive leap forward technologically and was 3D and had no rules, unlike most of its predecessors. It was considered the first sandbox/open world game. players were given the choice to play as a good or evil character.
Super mario bros
while mario debuted in donkey kong, he became an icon in games in super mario bros. The game looked very simple and beautiful but had a level of difficulty that made it challenging for any player. The game made players want to do better and its simple design made it so players would not feel angry at the game itself.

Tetris
Tetris was a great hybrid of puzzles and coordintaion and appealed to a wide audience. The simplistic gameplay made the game very straightforward and easy to pick up for new players. the game was also one of the first games to be considered addicting.
Monkey Island
one of the first video games to really focus on mixing the entertainment of games with good storytelling. many story based games before had limited game play if any, and were focused mostly on text and commands. Monkey Island was considered a breakthrough in cinematic storytelling which would only increase in popularity as time progressed

Street fighter II
street fighter 2 was an immensely popular cabinet game in the 1990s. It was a large leap forward in competitive gaming . The gameplay also had a focus on strategy, co-ordination ad memory, where special moves could be used in the game.
Doom
Doom popularised the 3D First person shooter. The game also pushed the limits of violence in video games with its shooting based gameplay. The game was considered to be very scary by players due to a number of gameplay mechanics that had never been utilised before. The sound design and look of the videogame also added to the immersive and spooky nature of the game. Doom also had a mulitplayer mode which was also very groundbreaking.
Night trap
combined video games with live action film. Night trap became very controversial as many felt it was very voyeuristic and sexist in its portrayal of women. Moral panic was a big factor of the video games causing violence debate in america, Doom and Night trap were two titles that were big parts of that debate.

Tomb Raider
one of the only titles at the time to focus a female character as the main character of a game, Laura croft became an instant icon in the video game industry. The game was released on the Playstation. At the time she was very much in the middle of the debate about how women were represented within video-games, and as the years progressed the character of Laura croft became more about story and less about her appearance

Parappa was a large step forward in the genre of rhythm action games. It served as a new type of gameplay in a saturated market of action shooting games of the 1990s. The game influenced many other hits such as guitar hero, Dance Dance Revolution,
Starcraft
A largely popular live timed strategy game with a large following in the competitive game market. Starcrafts competitive scene became very large in south korea. It also showed that there was a large interest in just watching others play games and how immersive that experience could be.

Grand theft Auto III
earlier iterations in the GTA series were often top down with limited graphics, however the third game in the franchise offered more immersion with its 3d world. It came at a time of freedom in videogames and allowed played to do whatever they wanted.
Shadow of the colossus
unlike GTA shadow of the colossus focused on the consequences of the actions taken. this would go on to shift the perspective of many players that they might not always be the hero in the story.
World of Warcraft
The Massively Multiplayer game genre became very large with the blizzard title world of warcraft.
the game became very famous as a time waster and became very addictive and immersive.
