Stop Motion Research

Within our team of  four we've decided to split up the tasks into the things we feel each member is good at. I've been tasked with the character designs.

In out story there will be Two characters, A dad and his daughter. The story will also briefly mention a dead wife/,other but it is likely she will be represented through imagery and symbolism so a character design for her might not be entirely necessary. Our project we are wanting to do partly in 3d/Claymation style, with a nightmare section taking place in cutout/ silhouette.

The basic plot outline is that a dad ends up being verbally abusive to his daughter after the death of his wife. He then realises his daughter views him as a monster as he views how her dream of her old life transforms into a nightmare as he is shown personified as a monster. He realises that his actions were wrong and he needs to step up as a parent and care more for his daughter now that the mother is gone.

Because me only have access to one Skeleton to use for the claymation, we wanted the girl, who will be the focus of the animation, to have the 3D model.

In total I would like to find a design with the girl in 3D the father as a cutout/silhouette, and the father as a personification of a monster that the daughter sees him as, which will also be in Silhouette/cutout due to out limitations

I wanted to take some inspiration from other works done in a similar style. Some of the animations I took inspiration from are:

The Shins- The Rifles spiral

I really liked the style of the character design with the mixture of real fabric for the clothing and clay for the model. The Video also has quite a dark muted colour palette which I think could lend well to the Nightmare scenes of the story.

Coraline - Henry Selick

Coralines character design is similar to those aspects, but her design is much more colourful and bright. However it still makes use of some more darker tones like the red in her clothes and the blue in her hair. Colours are something that need to be considered if we want to give the audience an expectation for the character

The Little Prince

THe little prince is a mixture between 3D CG Animation and Stop Motion animation. I really like the simplistic design of the little prince. I think the Facial features would be easy to replicate for our production and would be easier to manipulate while animating.

Lotte Reiniger - The adventures of Prince Achmed

For the Silhouettes/cutouts, I think Lotte Reiniger would work well because of the simple character designs and no need for colouring and adding details except for the silhouettes of the characters
During the nightmare sequence, we could also make the background red or other colours associated with fear and nightmares to set the mood of the scene. The characters being silhouetted may also remind the viewer of shadows and the night time, which is frequently associated with fear etc.

The Shins - Half A million

I really like the techniques used in this video with taking a video then using the individual frames in a stop motion way. This could be something we could maybe consider using with the father. Probably not to the degree of the video but it is something I could keep in mind when designing the characters.
