Video Game history
The early years of technology and computing had a large part to play in the formation of video games, although the link may not always be that obvious to people. The beginnings of video games happened in the 17th century.
A basic timeline of events that occurred leading up to the creation of a computer:
17th/18th Century:
1679: Binary code is invented by Gottfried Leibniz, this code could be used in a primitive calculating machine
1770: Chess machine known as the Turk was a chess machine built by inventor Wolfgang von kempelen . A mechanical figure would move the chess pieces and look at the opponents moves before playing its next turn
19th Century:

1804: Joseph Jacquard built on binary code by inventing a steam powered weaving loom. It was controlled by a card with punched out holes. these acted as instructions for the machines
1821: Charles Babbage designs the difference engine and Analytical Engine. Difference engines use arithmetical addition to calculate.
The engines were never built but inspired others
1843: The first programmer Ada Lovelace translated notes on the analytical engines with her own extensive notes on the subject
1890: US census clerk Herman Hollerith uses the punch cards popularized by by jacquard and Babbage and adds electricity
all citizens data was encoded on a punch card. This invention was later turned into a business which evolved into IBM
Early 20th Century
1914-20: Chess machine created by Torres y Qevedo
1923:The Enigma machine is used by the British war force to crack encoded nazi messages to help turn the tides of World War Two
1947: Thomas T.Goldsmith jr and Estle Ray Mann file a patent for their new invention, the :cathode ray tube amusement device
1948: Manchester university engineers find a way to store memory using electrical charges
Mid 20th Century/ The First Computer Games:

1950: Claude Shannon creates a program for a chess playing computer program
Alan Turing: Enigma machine, in 1946 he created a design for the automatic computing engine which had the capability to store programs in its memory
1951: Baby became the prototype for the first computer available for general use. aka the ferrabti Mark I. it was recorded by the BBC playing several songs such as baa baa black sheep. It is the earliest know recording of digital music.
1952: Naughts and crosses is created on Cambridge University's Electronic Delay Storage Automatic calculator
1954: Los Alamo's laboratories programmers create the first blackjack program on an IBM701 computer
1955: US military Designs a training program called hutspiel
1955: The first use of the word Hack in a computer sense
1956: Arthur Samuel debuts his checker machine on an IBM-701 which will later go on to defeat a checkers master
1957: The first computer chess program is created on an IBM 704 by Alex Bernstein. It has the capability to evaluate four half moves ahead
1958: Tennis for two
1959: MIT students create program Mouse in the Maze on the TX-0 computer. Users draw a maze with a pen then the mouse navigates the screen to find the cheese
1960: John Burgeson who was employed by IBM created a baseball program with his brother Paul on an IBM 1620
1961: Raytheon create a simulation of global cold war conflict. It is sophisticated ti the point where users unfamiliar with computers consider it too complex to use
1961: PDP=I is used by three MIT programmers to create the first game considered to be a real video game. Introduced many concepts such as real time action and shooting.
1963: US defense department creates game known as Simulation of Total Atomic Global Exchange
STAGE shows that the US would deafeat the USSR.
1964: Everyone can be a programmer
Dartmout University John Kemeny wants to make this possible and he and Keith Bellairs create computer time share system and Basic Programming Language. this makes it easy for newcomers and students to program and write their own programs
The Creation of the 'Video game' to be played with a console that connects to a televsion
1966: Ralph Baer immigrates to the US in 1938 to escape Nazi repression and server in the army in WW II. builds airborn radar components. Wanted to change TV into something for people to interact with. He creates the Magnavox Odyssey console in 1972
1970:
1971: Minnesota students Don Rawitsche, Bill Heinemann and Paul Dillenberg create oregon trail, which simulates pioneers trekking through the americas. The game is distributed nationawide by the Minnesota Educational Computer Consortium
