New Zealand Film and Animation History: Jane Campion

Jane Campion is a New Zealand born film director, who was born in Wellington in 1954. One of her most famous works is the 1993 Drama film The Piano, but she has also worked on other films and Television shows. She is credited as a writer for The Piano, Top of the lake, Bright star and 9 others. Campion is also credited with directing 18 films/Series in total. Her works vary over a range of genres, Including mystery thrillers, Periodic Dramas and Romance.

Her most famous film, The Piano, did fairly well. The film was estimated to have a budget of $7,000,000 and made  $40,158,000 US in the box office (IMDb).  It also recieved many nominations and awards. The Piano went on to win 3 Oscars... These included Holly Hunter as the Best Actress in a Leading Role, Anna Paquin for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role, as well as finally Jane Campion, who won the Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. The film also went on to win another 60 various awards, and was nominated for another 56 nominations

Before she found international success with The Piano, her previous 1990 film An Angel At My Table won numerous awards, including the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival that same year, as well as prizes at the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals An Angel at my table was also voted the most popular film at the 1990 Sydney Film Festival too.


Her film was also featured in the documentary Out of the mist, which showcases many of New Zealands prolific directors and how our countries relationship and identity in relationship with film has changed throughout history, and how it has also stayed mostly the same.
