A Critique of Animation: Response to Anselm Franke.

Who were the people: Harun Farocki Is a German filmmaker whose works have a focus on documenting how images are produced and the practices of labour.  Marey and Mubridge worked between the 1850s and 1880s studying the motion of animals through photography. there works have been used by animators and filmmakers alike to study the movement of both people and animals. Their most famous work is The horse in motion, which was the first piece of evidence that when a horse runs, at one point all four hooves will be off the ground. Theyre works also included Falling cat, which was released in 1894 and demonstated a cats motion in regards to falling.

Thom Anderdson was a Documentary Director, who created a film on Marey/Muybridge and their focus on the movement of animals in the year 1975. This film is referenced in Harun Farockis paper.

A reductionist attempts to “reduce” the mental to the physical. A reductionist about natural objects would attempt to identify some “higher level” object. A non-reductionist resists these identity claims.
