Parody / Copyright notes

5 Examples of Parody

  • Saturday Night Live: Matt the Radar Technician (Parody of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Undercover Boss)
  • Amish Paradise by Weird Al Yankovic (Parody of song Gangstas Paradise by Coolio)
  • Johnny English (Movie parody of British spy films/James Bond)
  • Galaxy Quest (Movie parody of the Star Trek series and the fanbase culture around it)
  • Rick and Morty (Animated series that parodies the characters Marty and Doc from the Back to The future series)
SNL: The skit used many iconic characters and costumes that belong to the Star Wars brand, and ultimately Disney. In the skit the characters portrayed had the same names and appearances, and in some cases actors as the disney film, which could be considered too close to the source material to be allowed for 'Parody', which is a term that can be used to protect content creators that use Intellectual property of others, if it is used in a way to poke fun of the source material.

Amish Paradise: While the lyrics have been changed, the backing track is the original, which might possibly cause copyright issues.

Johnny English: The premise of both Johnny English and James Bond is very similar, but is different enough that it would be hard to claim copyright for, as the story mainly parodies the subgenre of british spy films rather than James Bond as a character himself.

Galaxy Quest: Galaxy Quest shares many similarities as the source material it copies, like similar costumes and actors portraying the characters, but mostly mocks the genre of scifi 70's shows and the culture that surounds it, rather than the series itself.

Rick and Morty features a parody of characters from a movie series, however these characetrs are only loosesly based off of these characters, and the storyline in the show varies greatly from that of the Back to the future trilogy which it took inspiration from.
